There are a few species of wasp that we generally come into contact with - or them with us! The main 2 are :
They tend to build nests inside buildings (sheds, lofts, garages, kennels)
There is also:
- a tree wasp (dolichovespula sylvestris) and
- a Norwegian wasp (dolichovespula norwegica)
These species tend to build nests in trees, bushes and in the ground.
Wasps are very aggressive but are generally useful to us in helping to control other pests by feeding the insects they capture to their larvae.
The queen lays 1000's of eggs throughout the spring and summer months.
We start to notice wasps more towards the end of the season (unless we have a wasps nest inside our property) when all the workers have nothing to do.This is when we become more aware of them - at picnics and barbecues, in a beer garden or around over-ripe and fermenting fruit.
They don't last long; the queen is the only one to over-winter so she can start a new colony in the following spring/ summer.
